Pre-purchase surveys for boats and yachts

Know the true condition of the boat before you sit down to close the deal.

From the deck to the engine room, from the hull below the waterline to the ship’s papers, every item is inspected against a checklist built for that type of boat. Findings become a report with photographs, priorities and estimated repair costs — shared by a single link, so buyer and seller read the same document.

5 boat types
Separate checklists for motor yachts, sailing boats/catamarans, gulets, fishing and tour boats
200+ checkpoints
Each with a "what to look for" guide, a criticality level and its regulatory basis
Sea trial included
At least 20 minutes at full throttle: temperature, vibration, manoeuvring and the bilge afterwards

What does a survey cover?

A boat that looks fine on her mooring behaves differently under load. That is why the static inspection, the hull check out of the water and the sea trial are judged together.

Deck and deck gear

  • Soft spots and delamination in the deck laminate
  • Watertightness of hatches, portlights and deck penetrations
  • Load test of stanchion bases, guard rails and lifelines
  • Windlass, anchor, chain marking and chain locker drainage
  • Backing plates under cleats and mooring points

Engine room

  • Exhaust riser/elbow corrosion — the failure that destroys engines
  • Water or fuel in the oil and coolant, crankcase pressure
  • Raw water pump, impeller and heat exchanger pencil anode
  • Type and age of fuel hoses, water in the separator bowl
  • Fixed fire suppression system and compartment ventilation

Hull below the waterline

  • Osmosis/blister survey and moisture meter readings
  • Keel joint, keel bolts and crack inspection
  • Shaft seal, cutless bearing play, propeller damage
  • Every seacock operated individually, double hose clamps
  • Cathodic protection: anode wastage and signs of stray current

Papers and legal status

  • Validity of the registry certificate and any unpaid dues
  • Encumbrances: mortgage, seizure and "not for sale" annotations
  • HIN/hull and engine serial numbers matched against the register
  • CE category, seaworthiness certificate and radio licence
  • Liferaft service and fire extinguisher inspection dates
